It’s Fall. The weather is getting cooler. The leaves are changing colors. Everyone around you is sneezing from seasonal allergies or catching a cold! Even worse, flu season is around the corner and people are starting to get sick!

Every year, millions of people get the flu. Believe it or not, thousands also die from the flu. There’s a really simple way to protect yourself—get a flu shot. I know, you hate shots! Check with your doctor, you may be able to get a flu mist instead. A flu mist is a gentle nasal spray that is administered through your nose. It’s a great option for those who hate shots. It’s especially great for those with children who tend to cry and scream at the doctor’s office.

UnitedHealthcare recommends that almost everyone six months and older should get a flu shot each year. A flu shot is especially important for children younger than five years old, adults 65 and older, pregnant women, people with chronic conditions like asthma, people with weak immune systems, people in nursing homes, and healthcare workers.

Check with your health insurance provider and even your local pharmacy. Some insurance plans include a flu shot each year. Many pharmacies even provide it free or at a discounted price with proof of insurance—so you don’t have to worry about making an appointment with your doctor!

So, get ready to roll up your sleeves and get that flu shot!
