TalentFIT: August 31st is National Trail Mix Day

Did you know that today is NATIONAL TRAIL MIX DAY?

Observed annually on August 31, National Trail Mix Day honors the mix that was developed as a healthy snack to be taken along on hikes. Trail mix is the ideal hiker’s snack food. It’s lightweight, easy to store, and nutritious. The carbohydrates in the dried fruits and granola provide a quick energy boost and the fats in the nuts provide some longer-lasting energy.

Apparently, there’s some argument as to who exactly “created” the first batch of trail mix. One claim to the invention is held by two California surfers, who in 1968 blended peanuts and raisins together for an energy snack. It’s also mentioned in the 1958 novel by Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums. Some even say the recipe may be European in origin. But it doesn’t matter who invented it. Trail mix is just a reminder that today would be a great day to get out there and get some exercise. Enjoy the weather. Go for a hike! Of course, don’t forget to bring some trail mix with you, so that you have a nourishing snack to keep you energized along the way.
